If you want to come to New Zealand as a tourist, visit family and friends, you need enough money to support yourself and others included in your application during your stay.

To be a genuine visitor you need to give evidence that you are a genuine tourist or visitor and intend to leave New Zealand at the end of your stay, have enough money to maintain yourself and each accompanying members for the duration of your stay including a return ticket.(NZ$ 1000.00 for each applicant per month or NZ$ 400.00 for each applicant in case of prepaid accommodation)

Depending on your itinerary the maximum stay provided on visitor visa if for 9 months, however normal visitor visa is for the duration of 3 Months and requires a return ticket as evidence. You can apply for this visa to visit:

  • Family (Cousins, Parent, Siblings etc.)
  • Friends who are either a Resident or Citizen of New Zealand or have valid work Visa to New Zealand.
  • Study for not more than 3 months (with genuine Intensions)

Partnership Based Visas

If your partner is in New Zealand either on Student Visa, Work Visa or as a permanent Resident/Citizen, you may be eligible to apply for Work or Visitor Visa based on partnership. You may be eligible to apply as partner if you are:

  • In legal marriage
  • In civil union
  • In de-facto relationship
  • Of a Good character
  • Meet health requirements

    Also your sponsor should be:

  • Above 18 years of age
  • Should hold valid visa (student, PR) or a NZ citizen
  • Should not be close relative
  • Have met each other personally

Applicant need to provide the evidence of Genuine and stable Relationship with partners. What types of Visa are you eligible for depends on the duration of your partnership and the visa your sponsor holds for New Zealand. Partnership Based on New Zealand Permanent Resident/Citizen

If you’re the partner of a New Zealand citizen or resident, you can apply to New Zealand for Visitor Visa, Work Visa or to live permanently. If the visitor visa is granted you are not allowed to work in New Zealand however you can apply to change the circumstances and apply for working rights being in New Zealand for which a fresh application will be submitted onshore with Immigration New Zealand. If you are granted a work visa or resident Visa, you can live, work and study in New Zealand indefinitely.

Under partnership visa your sponsoring partner should provide any one of the following:

  • a New Zealand passport
  • a New Zealand birth certificate
  • a certificate of New Zealand citizenship
  • a New Zealand residence class visa.

If you’re the partner of a New Zealand Work Visa Holder, you can apply to New Zealand for Visitor Visa or Work Visa for the duration of your sponsor’s visa. You cannot apply/stay in New Zealand beyond the duration of your sponsor’s Visa.

You can’t apply for this visa if your partner’s work visa is a Working Holiday Visa, a Skilled Migrant Category or Silver Fern Job Search Work Visa, a Recognised Seasonal Employer Limited Visa, or a Supplementary Seasonal Employment, Fishing Crew or Domestic Staff of a Diplomat Work Visa.

You need to show the evidence of genuine and stable partnership. Your partner must hold appropriate Work Visa for New Zealand and is ready to sponsor you. If you are applying for Visitor Visa you should have sufficient amount of funds to maintain yourself in New Zealand (NZ$ 1000.00 per month). If you are applying for Work Rights/Work Visa your partner’s Visa duration should be more than 6 months at the time of decision.

Partnership Based on New Zealand Student Visa Holder

If you’re a partner of New Zealand Student Visa Holder, you can apply for Visitor visa or Work Visa depending upon the level of study your partner is studying in New Zealand. You will not get work rights if your partner is studying for level 5, Level 6 or Diploma programs for Level 7. You can apply for work Visa if your partner is studying for Degree program for Level 7 or Higher. You will be granted the Visa for the same duration your partner holds the student Visa. You can bring your child along on Visitor Visa.

You need to show the evidence of genuine and stable partnership. Your partner must hold Valid Student Visa for New Zealand and is ready to sponsor you. If you are applying for Visitor Visa you should have sufficient amount of funds to maintain yourself in New Zealand (NZ$ 1000.00 per month). If you are applying for Work Rights/Work Visa your partner’s Visa duration should be more than 6 months at the time of decision.

Skilled Migration

Skilled Migration as name describes itself that a person should have a particular skill and experience which can benefit New Zealand economy can apply under this category. This category works on the principle of Point system designed by Immigration Department. The points are calculated on basis of individuals AGE, QUALIFICATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, JOB OFFER IN NEW ZEALAND, CLOSE FAMILY MEMBER AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS.

Currently INZ is accepting application which can claim 160 Points or above. One cannot apply for this visa if he is a business owner or self-employed.

Age – Person should be less than 55 Years of Age

Close Family member – Should be part of your own family or first relations

Work Experience – Should have atleast 2 Years of full time Professional Work Experience

Job Offer – May have Job Offer from approved New Zealand Employer related to the qualification and current experience

Qualification – Should have qualification equivalent to New Zealand Diploma or Degree.

Bonus Points – Applicant can claim/earn bonus points for following:

  • Have worked in Identified Future Growth Area New Zealand
  • Have worked in Absolute Skills Shortage in New Zealand
  • Have worked in New Zealand defined as outside Auckland region
  • Have worked anywhere in New Zealand
  • Have studied in New Zealand
  • Have qualification in occupation identified as Future Growth Area
  • Have qualification in occupation identified as Absolute Skills Shortage
  • Applicant’s partner holds relevant qualification equivalent to New Zealand Diploma or Degree

Skill Migration Application Process:

  • Calculate points to be claimed under the application process.
  • Get the Qualifications assessed by NZQA to claim points.
  • Obtain a job offer from employer in New Zealand
  • Submit an Expression of Interest
  • Expression of Interest goes into the pool for 12 months period
  • Expressions of Interest are ranked and selected according to current immigration selection criteria every two weeks.
  • If Expression of Interest is approved and selected you receive an invitation to apply
  • Prepare the Skill Migration Application, collect necessary documents to support application and send the application to the office address shown on the invitation to apply letter.
  • Your application is assessed on all claimed points criteria.
  • Visa Officer decides your application and give decision. Possible decisions would be:

Application approved – you received the resident visa

Your application is deferred - You receive a nine-month Job Search temporary visa for the purpose of obtaining an offer of ongoing skilled employment in New Zealand. Once you provide evidence of this to INZ your application will be approved

Application Declined – Application closed. If you have received the Temporary Job Search Visa you can work in New Zealand and get opportunity to lodge another work visa application.
